The paint shines.
The body is straight.
The interior is clean.
And the history report doesn't show any major accidents.
So the car has never been damaged, right?
Not necessarily.

Factory-installed bolts often have paint over them.
If a bolt has:
Tool marks
Chipped paint
Scratches
Different finish
the component may have been removed or adjusted.
That doesn't prove collision damage.
A panel can be removed for many legitimate reasons.
But combined with paint mismatch and unusual panel gaps?
Now you're building a pattern.
Stand in front of the vehicle with the hood open.
Compare the left and right sides.
Look at:
Inner fender areas
Structural rails where visible
Aprons
Fasteners
Sealant
Paint
Welds
You're looking for symmetry.
If one side looks factory-original and the other looks noticeably different, investigate further.
Modern vehicle bodies use factory welding techniques during manufacturing.
Previous structural repair may leave evidence of:
Non-factory welds
Different spot-weld patterns
Grinding marks
Weld beads
Replacement sections
Different seam sealer
This becomes more technical.
An average buyer shouldn't be expected to determine whether a weld is factory-original.
But if something clearly looks different from the opposite side:
Photograph it and show a professional.
Manufacturers use seam sealer throughout vehicle bodies to protect joints and seams.
Factory application often has a relatively consistent appearance.
Previous repair may leave:
Different texture
Different color
Uneven application
Excess material
Missing sealer
Compare the repaired-looking area with the equivalent area on the opposite side.
Differences can provide useful clues.
Open the trunk.
Remove the cargo floor if it's designed to be easily removed.
Look around the spare-tire well.
This area can sometimes reveal evidence of rear-end collision repair.
Check for:
Wrinkled metal
Unusual welds
Different paint
Cracked seam sealer
Water intrusion
Rust
Repair marks
The exterior bumper may look perfect while evidence underneath tells a different story.
Use a flashlight from a safe position.
Don't crawl underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Look for:
Bent metal
Scrapes
Unusual welds
Fresh undercoating
Different-colored sections
Crushed components
Structural deformation
Fresh undercoating isn't automatically suspicious.
It may have been applied for corrosion protection.
But fresh coating on only one small structural area deserves a closer look.
Ask what it's covering.
Every piece of glass on a vehicle doesn't necessarily need to have exactly the same markings.
Windshields, for example, are commonly replaced because of rock chips and cracks.
But glass markings can still provide clues.
Inspect:
Windshield
Door windows
Quarter glass
Rear window
Look at manufacturer markings and date information where available.
If most glass appears original to the vehicle's production period but one side window is noticeably different, ask why.
Maybe it was broken during theft.
Maybe a rock damaged it.
Maybe that door was involved in a collision.
It's another clue—not proof.
Lights are frequently replaced after collisions.
Compare left and right assemblies.
Look for differences in:
Brand
Age markings
Clarity
Weathering
Fitment
Imagine a 10-year-old vehicle.
One headlight is slightly cloudy.
The other looks brand new.
Why?
It may simply have been replaced because the old one failed.
Or the front corner may have been damaged.
Look at the surrounding evidence.

Inspect all four.

Feel unstable?
Alignment problems are common and don't automatically indicate collision damage.
But persistent alignment problems can sometimes be related to:
Bent suspension components
Structural damage
Poor previous repairs
Have it checked.
Previous body repairs can sometimes affect:
Door alignment
Window sealing
Weatherstripping
During the test drive, listen for unusual wind noise around one door or window.
Again:
Not proof.
A worn weatherstrip can cause the same symptom.
You're looking at the entire collection of evidence.
Poorly aligned or repaired body panels can sometimes allow water intrusion.
Inspect:
Carpet
Trunk
Spare-tire well
Headliner edges

Look for:

The airbag/SRS warning light should behave according to the manufacturer's normal sequence.
If it:
Stays illuminated
Flashes abnormally
Never appears when it should
have the supplemental restraint system professionally diagnosed.
Never assume an airbag warning is minor.
Seat-belt systems can also be affected during collisions.
Check that:
Belts extend
Belts retract
Buckles operate
Warning systems behave normally
Some collision events can trigger seat-belt pretensioners.
Determining whether restraint-system components have been properly replaced is best left to a qualified professional.
Now compare your physical inspection with the documented history.
Look for:
Reported accidents
Damage severity where available
Salvage history
Rebuilt title
Structural damage
Airbag deployment
Auction records
Ownership history
Mileage records
Vehicle-history reports can be extremely valuable.
But here's the important part:
A clean report does not prove the vehicle has never been damaged.
Not every incident is necessarily reported to the database you're using.
Treat the report as one piece of evidence.

Other designations

Now the evidence fits together.
Compare that with:
Replacement windshield only

No other body evidence
That tells a very different story.
Context matters.
If you confirm that the vehicle has been repaired, ask:
What happened?
When did it happen?
How severe was the damage?
Who repaired it?
Were structural components damaged?
Were airbags deployed?
Are repair records available?
Has the vehicle required alignment corrections since?
Is there any warranty on the repair?
The answers help you decide whether the repair history is acceptable.
Possibly.
A professionally repaired vehicle with documented minor damage may still be an excellent purchase.
The decision should consider:
Repair quality
Damage severity
Structural involvement
Title status
Current mechanical condition
Resale value
Purchase price
The key is knowing what you're buying.
